The Winston-Salem, N.C. -based bank, a major Richmond-area employer, apologized to customers and said it was keeping most bank branches open until 7 p.m. Friday and would offer extended hours on Saturday as it worked to restore service. In a statement online, the bank said customers can still use BB&T ATMs and BB&T debit, credit and prepaid cards.

A massive and near total service outage throughout the system of mid-Atlantic banking giant BB&T (stock symbol: BBT) continued Friday afternoon.

BB&T is restoring some of the services it lost after what it calls an equipment malfunction. If customers incur fees due to the outage "we will waive or reimburse those fees", Davis said. "You claim to "hear" our frustrations yet you don't address that which we are frustrated about".

Thank you so very much for your patience.

The bank says the outage was caused by an equipment malfunction in one of their data centers. "Shame on you", one customer wrote on BB&T's Twitter page.

The bank added, "we have no reason to believe this issue is related to cybersecurity".

According to its most recent earnings report, BB&T posted net income of $2.42 billion for 2017.
