Man says AirPod exploded, Apple investigating

A Florida man says one of his Apple AirPods started smoking as he was working out at a St. Petersburg gym.

Jason Colon says he was working out and listening to music and noticed smoke billowing from his airpods. He took off the earphone and left it atop a piece of gym equipment to seek help and once he returned, the earphone had exploded and was charred. When he got back, he found that the right AirPod was wrecked.

Apple said it was investigating.

"I didn't see it happen, but, I mean, it was already fried", Colon told local television station WFLA TV. He further stated that "I don't know what would've happened to my ear". Even Colon isn't sure why the wireless AirPods blew up, and there have been no prior reports of exploding AirPods either. Such as the Beats headphones that exploded in flight burning a woman's ears, or the ubiquitous Samsung Galaxy Note 7 that was prone to enough fiery incidents that it caused a series of nightmares for the company. It stands to reason that, like any other rechargeable battery, those units could be damaged or defective in a way that could cause them to rupture. Apple is likely to investigate the incident, but just don't hold your breath in learning about their findings.

We've always been largely unimpressed with the quality of Apple's EarPods headphones, and were hoping to see a dramatic improvement in their standard following Apple's acquisition of Beats in 2014. Colon was obviously thankful that he had removed the right AirPod before it exploded. As for now, what are your thoughts on the AirPods blowing up on a Florida man?

This isn't the first case of a popular product bursting into flames.
