The security screening process at the International Terminal was interrupted after an incident.

A spokesperson for Sydney Airport told ARN that the technical problems arose from "an underlying technology issue that we were addressing".

Would-be commuters were left stuck at check-in early on Friday morning after a technical issue resulted in the security screening being unable to open.

While inbound flights were OK, passengers at the T1 worldwide and T2 Domestic terminals arrived at the airport on Friday morning to swarms of people waiting in line and wondering what the hell was going on.

Passengers are being urged to avoid these terminals as the airport staff work to resolve the issue.

Long lines filled the worldwide terminal and one of two domestic terminals on Friday after an "underlying technology issue" was discovered before opening.

"We are now processing passengers at Sydney Airport".

A spokeswoman for Qantas told Daily Mail Australia terminal 3 had not been affected, and flights were running as normal.

"We're advising passengers and visitors to avoid T1 and T2 until further notice", a Tweet from Sydney Airport said at 6:08am.

The airport is now experiencing technical issues at security and check-in desks, causing major interruptions to outbound flights.

Australian Federal Police officers are investigating the matter.
