ICE arrests 150 in immigrant raids, blasts Schaaf over warning

Even though 150 illegal aliens were arrested in ICE's latest Bay Area operation, almost 900 were able to avoid the raids because Democratic Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf tipped off the communities' illegal population via social media, announcing that "multiple credible sources" informed her about the raids, which she said were to take place "within 24 hours".

"I was sharing information in a way that is legal. not obstructing justice. opportunity to make sure people are aware of their rights", said Libby Schaf, Oakland Mayor.

According to ICE's fiscal year 2017 report, the five most common criminal convictions nationwide among those arrested by the agency were driving under the influence of alcohol, possessing or selling "dangerous drugs", previous immigration offenses such as falsifying citizenship claims, traffic offenses and assault. Further, it demonstrates that ICE is committed to continuing major enforcement activity in cities and states that attempt to circumvent federal immigration law.

Ponce said she believes ICE is using her husband's arrest as a means to scare other undocumented immigrants in their community. We have made it clear to the Trump Administration that San Francisco's Sanctuary City laws are in compliance with federal law.

Federal authorities rounded up more than 200 people in 122 workplace raids in Los Angeles last Friday, part of a nationwide effort by the Trump administration to target so-called sanctuary jurisdictions.

Juan Pierto, an undocumented 25-year-old who has been living in the US for 17 years, said depression is rising in his family. "What she did is no better than a gang lookout yelling "police" when a police cruiser comes in the neighborhood, except she did it for the entire community".

The document in question, obtained through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, outlines why ICE served a deportation notice to Bellingham resident Maru Mora Villalpando in December.

"She's on the threshold of obstruction of justice for doing what she did", Brass said.

It simply allows California's state and local law enforcement officers to focus on their jobs of protecting their communities, while leaving immigration enforcement to the feds.

Nunez-Salgado is in a federal holding facility with other detained undocumented immigrants, Ponce said, adding that he told her the facility is severally crowded.

Homan slammed Schaaf, who on Saturday night released an unprecedented warningthat ICE was about to begin arresting people. "Rather than focus on people who are unsafe criminals, we hear ICE may be terrorizing communities, including family members who are citizens". "We always have been and we always will be a sanctuary city".

Diana Blank, who was at the event representing the Staff Attorneys Union at the New Haven Legal Assistance, said she is alarmed by the increasing presence of ICE officials in courts.

Homan said ICE deportation officers were still able to remove many "public safety threats" from Bay Area streets.

But the mayor stood by her decision, saying Tuesday that she feared the arrests would affect many undocumented immigrants who had no other criminal convictions ― which, indeed, turned out to be the case. "But to give criminals a head's up we're coming next 24 hours, increases the risk", Homan said.

"We also knew in Mexico that the same political party always wins, but in 1994 the presidential candidate was assassinated at a public event", she said.
