Italian defender Astori, 31, was found dead at the La di Moret Hotel ahead of Fiorentina's Serie A clash with Udinese on Sunday.

Italy's top football league postponed its Sunday games to mourn the loss of Fiorentina captain and Italy global Davide Astori, whose team said he died of sudden illness at the age of 31. "Because of the awful and delicate situation, and most of all for the respect due to his family, we make an appeal to everybody's sensitiveness".

The soccer star, who leaves behind a two-year-old daughter, was in Udine to prepare for Sunday's match against Udinese.

The club is devastated to learn of the death of Davide Astori.

The sudden death of Astori left the football fraternity in shock.

Barcelona joined in the mourning, writing: "Barcelona expresses all its condolences for the unexpected loss of your captain, Davide Astori".

This included loan spells at Roma and Fiorentina before his permanent move.

Tottenham stated: "We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing all too early of Davide Astori".

"We gather around the family, friends, teammates and AFC Fiorentina right now, to all of them our deepest condolences".

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said coaching Astori when he was a player for Cagliari in 2008-2010 "has been a privilege", according to ANSA. Roma legend Francesco Totti, whom Astori spent that one season with, wrote: "Shocked, incredulous and speechless over this tragedy". The match was, of course, postponed with the agreement of the presidents of both clubs, closely followed by the cancellation of all today's other Serie A fixtures, including tonight's Milan derby.

Buffon played alongside Astori for Italy, the defender earning 14 caps across his career, and uploaded an eloquent tribute to his former team-mate on social media.

He made his global debut for Italy in 2011 and represented his country at the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, scoring a goal in Italy's victorious bronze-medal match.

All of Sunday's Serie A matches have been called off by the league.

"Davide was a true captain, a great person and it was an honour to have him hear for these years", he told reporters. Italy would go on to win the match on penalty kicks.

As per the club's official statement, Astori who would usually show up first for th team's breakfast was not present at the table which raised suspiciousness regarding his well being and upon checking his room, he was found lying lifeless.
