KAIPTC's Women Peace and Security Institute calls for consciousness on gender progress

In 1911, as a result of the Copenhagen initiative, International Women's Day was marked for the first time on March 19 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland, where more than one million women and men attended rallies.

The Acting President noted, however, that while Trinidad and Tobago continues to make strides toward gender parity, there is still a long way to go.

"While women are equally represented across the ABC board and in our leadership positions, International Women's Day affords us the opportunity to focus attention on the work still to be done", Ms Guthrie said. We know that, for people trying to escape domestic abuse, fear of the perpetrator finding out is a barrier to victims seeking support. It has been about campaigning for women equality and today IWD belongs to all groups collectively everywhere in the world.

The Women Peace and Security Institute wants to use this day to press for progress in the elimination of gender based violence across the African continent especially in areas where conflict continues to rage. According to the IWD website, "It is a strong call to motivate and unite friends, colleagues and whole communities to think, act and be gender inclusive".

But it has also become a day to highlight the struggles, inequality and oppression women still face in modern society.

This year's International Women's day holds also on March 8, as it has since 1913.

In 1910, The Socialist International met in Copenhagen and established a Women's Day, which honored the women's rights movement, and built support for voting rights for women.

What a great move that would be as parliament is a legislative, elected body of government where decisions for the country are debated and decided.

International Women's Day is observed annually and the international theme for this year is "Press For Progress". Let us help our women participate in socio-political life in order to achieve the very foundation and ideas of equality, progress and humanity'.

The realities create a glass ceiling made of a plethora of barriers hindering women from rising beyond what the society expects of them. It celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women. She added today's woman is independent and self-reliant in every respect and is capable of doing everything.

What colours signify International Women's Day?

Twelve years, after the struggle and protest in 1908 in NY, women got the right to vote in the US; this was following the ratification of the 19 Amendment to the US Constitution.

This modern interpretation of Judy Chicago's 1979 feminist piece "The Dinner Party", will take place at 7 p.m.at New York City Baha'i Center (53 E. 11th St.) and is "a celebration of women and vaginas throughout herstory" featuring spoken word artists, music, food and more.
