The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz on Tuesday selected ousted former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's brother Shahbaz Sharif as its president, Reuters reported. Climate Change Minister and PML-N's information secretary Mushahidullah Khan told reporters on Monday that the election of an interim president of the PML-N was the top agenda item for the CWC meeting. "Hence, Shehbaz Sharif would be elected party president after 45 days by the general council", the source added.

The bench cited Nawaz Sharif's disqualification as the premier of Pakistan a year ago on July 28 in corruption probe to rule that he was not qualified to assume position of a party head under the Constitution of Pakistan.

According to the party's rules, the PML-N's CWC is supposed to elect an acting party head within a week of its chief's removal.

Shahbaz Sharif has been elected for the interim period of 45 days until the general council meeting takes place next month to elect the full-time president.

The PML-N leader said action against Nawaz Sharif wasn't only against him but against democracy and the nation. The post is ceremonial but many in the party insist that Nawaz Sharif remain the leader of the party and that no decision be taken without his approval.

Mr Sharif denies any wrongdoing and has said his family fortune was obtained legally. She said that the PML-N stands united today and not a single member has parted ways with it.

Elections Act 2017 was pushed through the upper and lower houses of the parliament earlier and had paved the way for Nawaz to resume his position as party president after being disqualified in the Panama Papers case.

Nawaz Sharif had picked Shehbaz Sharif as acting president of the party last day.

Despite Nawaz Sharif's legal woes, the 68-year-old has maintained a tight grip on the party.

As a effect, all nominees by PML (N) for the upcoming March 3 Senate elections were declared as independents.

PML (N) has once again demonstrated political maturity by amicably resolving the tickling issue of the leadership of the party following disqualification of Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif as party head by virtue of a Supreme Court verdict.
