All government employees have been prohibited from traveling to the town.

The U.S. government has offered no details regarding the nature of the perceived security threat, either publicly or to the state government.

This popular tourist destination has been under heightened alert after two un-detonated explosive devices were found attached to a tourist ferry, Barcos Caribe II, by Mexican law enforcement in Cozumel on March 1.

Emergency crews attend to victims of the explosion in Playa del Carmen on February 21.

"Be aware of your surroundings and exercise caution", the alert states.

Playa del Carmen and other tourist regions have seen a surge in violence in recent months.

Some tourist destinations have no warnings against them, including Mexico City, Cancun, and Los Cabos.

Mexico issued a statement late Wednesday, saying that Playa del Carmen remains safe.

Last summer, vacationers were warned to be careful drinking alcohol in Mexico after a US traveler died at a resort near Playa del Carmen after drinking and other tourists said they had blacked out after drinking, USA Today reported. Playa del Carmen's beaches and resorts have typically been a huge attraction for spring break travelers from the United States. "Shooting incidents injuring or killing bystanders have occurred".

"Remain vigilant, stay in tourist areas and follow local media closely", the advisory reads.

Last week, four gunmen burst into a hospital in Cancun and killed a suspected drug gang member and his wife and, in 2017, four people were killed when a gunman attacked the state prosecutors' office in Cancun.

"All tourism and economic activity in Playa del Carmen continues in a normal manner", the state government wrote in a statement, noting that hotel occupancy at the resort was 80 percent.

According to Mexican authorities, the ferry incidents are under investigation.

More than 20 people including some US citizens were injured in the explosion, but no perpetrator has yet been found, BI reported.
