She stood beside Schneiderman when he announced a settlement previous year with a hospital that had been billing rape victims for exams. "The only potential conflict here is of your own creation", Vance wrote in the scathing letter, suggesting that Cuomo ordered the investigation into Vance's office as a politically motivated ploy to get attention the same day the Cynthia Nixon announced her campaign for governor. She says he later said: "You know, hitting an officer of the law is a felony".

On Monday night, Manning Barish tweeted a link to The New Yorker article and explained why she made a decision to talk.

Some possibilities? Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul, who Cuomo has actively encouraged to run for another office, which would open up a spot on his re-election ticket. Kirsten Gillibrand, quickly called for Schneiderman's resignation.

Bharara was the powerful USA attorney for New York's Southern District from 2009 - when he was appointed by President Barack Obama - to 2017, when he was sacked by President Donald Trump. He tweeted, "No one is above the law, and I'll continue to remind President Trump and his administration of that fact every day". Besides choking and slapping the women without their consent, Schneiderman also allegedly threatened them if they attempted to leave him or speak out against him. Schneiderman explained the incidents were consensual, and they were "engaged in role-playing".

In March 2010, Schneiderman - still a NY state senator - served as the lead sponsor for legislation that made "intentional strangulation and suffocation into unconsciousness a violent felony".

In a statement, Mr Schneiderman said he "strongly contests" the allegations.

"He started calling me his "brown slave" and demanding that I repeat that I was 'his property, '" she said, pushing back against the notion that what happened was "sexual play acting". "In one case, a woman wasn't even in a relationship at all with him, Alisyn".

Before the night was through, Schneiderman announced he would resign from his office at the close of business on Tuesday.

The current investigation of Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance over his handling of a sexual assault allegation against producer Harvey Weinstein highlights the sea change facing Schneiderman. Weinstein denies any non-consensual sex.

Cuomo then proved he was serious in getting to the bottom of the Schneiderman allegations by appointing Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas special prosecutor in the Schneiderman case.

Late Tuesday, members of the Senate Republican Women's Caucus - which includes Young and fellow senators Betty Little, Patty Ritchie, Kathy Marchione, Sue Serino, Elaine Phillips and Pam Helming - issued a statement decrying the hypocrisy of Schneiderman's actions.

Alphonso David says it was right to ask a special prosecutor to investigate the claims made by women who said they were abused by Eric Schneiderman (SHNEYE'-dur-muhn), a Democrat and critic of President Donald Trump.

Singas has quickly established a reputation for a smart, tough-minded approach to political corruption in Nassau County in a career that makes her especially well suited for the Schneiderman probe.
