Lightning desperate to fix problems down 0-2 to Capitals

On Tuesday, Evans told The Washington Post that the tiny, wealthy nation of Qatar has agreed to pay the $100,000 fee to keep Metro open until 12:30 a.m. on Thursday, when the Capitals host Game 4.

Both teams entered the game red-hot on the power play, and the Lightning's unsafe extra-man unit continued its terrorizing ways. Michal Kempny's goal from the point threaded a needle that likely goes wide if he tried it nine more times. With the Lightning again on a power play, Kucherov ripped it from the right circle. "I embrace when there's more on the line and the stakes are higher".

The Lightning rebounded to take a 2-1 lead in the first period of Game Two, but the Capitals responded with 5 unanswered goals to take a convincing 2-0 series lead.

It was about an hour before the start of Game 3 when Nikita Kucherov grabbed a ball and glove and began to play catch in the middle of a hallway with a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning's communications staff.

Stamkos ripped a power-play goal at 13:53 of the first period, on an assist from Victor Hedman.

There's an argument that they could have given him the night off on Tuesday to promote further healing with the team holding a healthy 2-0 lead series lead.

"A big thing for us, and I think it's worked I guess in the three games, is the team that really gets the lead is the team that's in the driver's seat", Cooper said. "There's no panic. We're obviously not happy with losing two games on home ice, but that is not something that goes into our locker room". Part of it was Vasilevskiy, who made the big saves when he needed to, but the bigger difference was that the Lightning was not constantly putting their goalie in a position to bail them out of trouble. They lost in six games to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1996 conference quarterfinals and in six to the Lightning in the 2003 conference quarterfinals.

Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom remained out of the lineup despite going through the morning skate. He says the way they've played in the Conference Finals is not the way they have played at all other points throughout the season.

The Capitals strike back with 9:29 left in the 2nd. Eller took his third of the night when he cross-checked Steven Stamkos, but Stamkos was sent off at the same time for roughing Eller in a tussle after the play.

4 on 3 for the Bolts.

A late goal in the second period from Brett Connolly and another from Evgeny Kuznetsov in the third made it interesting.

After not allowing Boston to score an even-strength goal in the final three games during the second round, Tampa Bay has been outscored 7-1 by Washington at even strength and 10-4 overall.

In the first two games against the Lightning, the Caps benefited from some puck luck that rarely occurs in such bunches even during the regular season.
