Civil rights groups have opposed the legislation, saying the "superfluous" legislation promotes the "untrue. unhelpful and dangerous" narrative that there's a "war on police" and "will have a negative impact on the relationship between law enforcement and the communities they serve".

The chief says the ceremony includes an honor guard comprised of local law enforcement personnel. The vast majority of interactions between law enforcement and the public are conducted without incident.

Sergeant Vernon Baker was an Oklahoma City police officer for 30 years. They all do an outstanding job and I greatly appreciate their efforts. "He provided a great service to the citizens of Texas in his service to the Texas Highway Patrol".

The annual Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Service will start at noon, Friday at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 3811 N. Main Street. Marked by the tolling of a bell, seven names were read when IL was called, including Rockford Police Officer Jaimie Cox. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. Over the last decade, on average 151 police officers are killed on duty in the United States each year and almost 50,000 are assaulted. Nationally, 135 officers were killed in 2017. The 2018 numbers through May 9 represent a 9 percent increase in comparison with the same period in 2017.

The sacrifices of the men and women who work around the clock to protect us will be remembered during the next few days, as members of area law enforcement agencies and people from all walks of life hold services around the country. This is 75 percent higher than this time a year ago. "And it is fitting and right that we join together annually as a nation to remember those who have given their all for us", said U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who was among a number of speakers to address the crowd. Each year during this week, families and colleagues of the fallen travel to our nation's capital for this fitting tribute.

An estimated 30,000 people attended the ceremony in person, including surviving family members, friends, law enforcement colleagues, and others. WE certainly appreciate Hampton. He spoke about tragic stories of fallen heroes, while also reaffirming his unquestioned support of the police. The Marshalltown community does an awesome job supporting their public safety personnel.

In honor of National Police Officers' Memorial Week, Clarinda Police's annual memorial ceremony takes place Wednesday afternoon at 2 at the Clarinda Cemetery's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. They all have my deep gratitude and respect.
