The launch was completed just after midnight local time, the satellite was deployed about 32 minutes after takeoff. SpaceX won't attempt to recover the first stage after the launch.

The 229-foot-tall (70-meter) rocket took off at 12:45 a.m. EDT (0445 GMT) Monday from Cape Canaveral's Complex 40 launch pad, and headed east over the Atlantic Ocean. This is the latest satellite SES has launched to that orbital position where it will operate under the authority of the Netherlands. The satellite operator, SES, tweeted, "What a handsome start to the week!" Instead, the satellite will have an electric drive that uses xenon gas pulses to slowly circulate its orbit around the equator for a period of months. The BFR is the rocket that SpaceX wants to use to get to Mars, and to make extremely quick Earth-to-Earth journeys.

SpaceX has launched another satellite for a Luxembourg communication company. The good side of all this is it actually extends our (on orbit) life capability from 15 to 22 years.

Standing some 27 feet tall and weighing almost 12,000 pounds, Halliwell joked that the spacecraft built in France by Airbus Defense and Space barely fit inside the Falcon 9 rocket's nose cone, or payload fairing. After extensive tests and checkout, SES-12 should enter operational service early next year. The company provides satellite communications services to broadcasters, content and internet service providers, mobile and fixed network operators, governments and institutions.

"Airbus salutes SES's ambitions regarding innovation and responsiveness in a rapidly changing market and we acknowledge their strong support for all-electric satellite technology", said Nicolas Chamussy, Head of Space Systems.
