McLean said many people in Redding didn't seem prepared for the blaze to reach their city.

Firefighters have been struggling to contain the so-called Ferguson Fire, which has raged near the 768,000-acre park since last week, shrouding the Half Dome and El Capitan peaks in smoke.

An evacuation center has been opened up at Shasta College as of Thursday. "This fire is out of control!", the agency wrote.

Exactly what led up to the firefighter's death is still being investigated by Cal Fire.

A private hire bulldozer operator died Thursday while battling the fire but no more details have been released.

Two other major fires are also burning in the state.

He said the fire burned over the bulldozer operator, who was hired privately, and his equipment. They also warned of possible afternoon wind gusts that could create unsafe fire conditions.

At least three firefighters have been injured, but the extent of their injuries is unknown, McLean said. A Cal Fire spokesman could only confirm portions of west Redding were under evacuation.

Flames have consumed trees, houses and historic buildings in Shasta County for days and temporarily closed traffic along Highway 299.

"As this fire was just exploding, it's just been inching closer and closer and closer to the station to the point where there was a neighborhood up in flames just about a mile away from the station, just across from the Sacramento River", Damante told ABC News' Paula Faris. "The concession stands are burned up".

"Right now we are being evacuated, that's why we are kind of closing out right now", said news anchor Allison Woods during a live broadcast. Firefighters and others on hand are dealing with extremely dry conditions and risky temperature, which are expected to reach 110 fahrenheit on Friday (July 26).

Continued hot and dry weather forecasted for the rest of the week, with triple digit temperatures.

The fire also has disrupted rail travel. The next morning, they left for Los Angeles.

Redding hospital has been evacuated - with at least five infants being rushed out and some babies being airlifted to hospitals in Sacramento.

"Emergency personnel are reporting on social media that they are stopping structure and containment efforts in north Redding in order to focus on safely evacuating all citizens".

Medics and hospital staff have been directly impacted by the fire.

Residents fled their homes ahead of the flames as officials ordered evacuations for parts of Redding, a city of 92,000, including for Damante and her station colleagues.

Highway 74 was closed from Cranston Fire Station to Lake Hemet, and Highway 243 was closed between Pine Cove and Mountain Center, according to fire officials.

California Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency Thursday for Riverside and Shasta counties in response to fires.

The conflagration is one of about 75 major wildfires burning in the United States in an unusually active fire season that has already scorched about 3.98 million acres, mostly in western states.

The blaze, which is raging west of the park, has burned 45,911 acres and is 29% contained, Cal Fire said Friday morning.

More than 3,300 firefighters are working the fire, aided by 16 helicopters.

On Wednesday, July 25, 2018, CAL FIRE Law Enforcement Officers arrested Brandon N. McGlover, 32 of Temecula for allegedly setting multiple fires in southwest Riverside County, California on July 25, 2018.
