Then, as Macron and Grabar-Kitarovic walked toward the tunnel to leave the field, his heels were nearly clipped by some exuberant France players who were sliding on their bellies and their behinds across the soaked grass toward a bank of photographers beside a group of state presidents.

But while the final will be a moment for the nation of Croatia to savour, if will be just the opposite for France.

Macron was on the pitch to greet and hug the French players and also went into the dressing room after the game to celebrate with the players and commend them on their success of winning France's second World Cup.

According to the soccer fanatics, Croatia's resilience and hard work throughout the tournament is the reason why they are rallying behind the team to win.

"We support France, but we are all together and that's a attractive thing".

"I am really emotional", she said.

As the final seconds of the World Cup final ticked over, the noise inside Cafe Bicyclette in Edmonton grew louder, French flags pulled tighter around shoulders.

But for Croatia it will be a match to savour. It was a long road, but it was worth while and we are world champions and very proud. We came back and we managed to make the difference.

"My game is changing, now I am more likely to dictate the rhythm or hold onto the ball".
