Today, the court also sentenced Maryam to seven years in prison. Maryam's husband, retired army Capt. Safdar Awan, got a one-year sentence for failing to cooperate with the National Accountability Bureau.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan on Friday while reacting to the sentence of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif said that now corrupt leaders will not go to the parliament but will be sent to jail.

"It is based on injustices". Alongside Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz has been given 7 years jail term.

Sharif, 68, is in London with his daughter, Maryam, was convicted after failing to prove a legal source of income for buying several luxury flats in the 1990s.

"We reject this decision", his brother Shahbaz Sharif, who is leading the PML-N into Pakistan's second ever democratic transition of power, told a televised press conference in Lahore shortly after the verdict. Nawaz Sharif has been fined eight million pounds and Maryam Nawaz two million pounds.

If Sharif returns he will be arrested on arrival under the law, though he could later be freed by a separate court pending appeal, Abbasi added.

The NAB court has also asked the federal government to confiscate the properties.

The deposed former prime minister Sharif was sentenced in absentia to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment by an anti-graft court in Islamabad in one of the three corruption cases against him in the Panama Papers scandal, dealing a huge blow to his party ahead of the elections on July 25. In July, last year, Sharif was ousted by the Pakistan supreme court in the Panamagate scandal. He denies drawing the monthly salary.

The verdict marked a further fall for the PML-N supremo, who has been Pakistan's prime minister three times but never completed a term.

The decision comes at a time of growing suspicion of military meddling in politics ahead of the polls, as well as media complaints of being muzzled.

Addressing a public gathering in Lower Dir on Friday, he said that Nawaz Sharif has gotten what he had done so far, adding that the ex-PM lied to hide his London properties. "Even with institutional pressure and this verdict, the party is maintaining its position", he said.

Pakistan's military, which has ruled the nuclear-armed country for nearly half its history, denies involvement in civilian politics. The convictions are a huge setback to the ruling PML-N, which has accused the country's powerful military establishment of conspiring against the party by forcing its candidates to switch sides and join the Opposition or contest elections as independents.

Khan is running on a socially conservative, anti-corruption platform. The reference pertains to the ownership of the Sharif family's apartments at Avenfield House, London.

November 2, 2016 - Supreme Court agrees to set up a judicial commission to probe corruption allegations against Sharif, stemming from Panama Papers leaks.
