Kerber is seeking to add a first Wimbledon title to her Australian and U.S. Open victories, which both came in 2016. She wore special compression leggings as a precaution during Wimbledon, just the fourth tournament of her comeback. She is just getting started, ' Ohanian wrote.

She had not faced anyone with the pedigree of the German though and was outmanoeuvred in the first set as Kerber's dogged defence forced too many errors. "They are really proud and without them I wouldn't be here, with all my family, they support me my whole life and I think they will drink tonight as well a little bit".

Ohanian had some wonderful words for his wife.

Urged on by husband Alexis Ohanian and her celebrity supporters, Williams upped her aggression and noise level, almost taking out her opponent with a thunderous drive volley in the third game of the second set.

Serena Williams will be holding a trophy again soon-she's got the greatest one waiting at home for her.

When last seen at Wimbledon before this fortnight, in the 2016 final, Williams won her seventh title by defeating Kerber, 7-5, 6-3.

Australian Margaret Court set the benchmark 43 years ago and, until now, the record has remained unchallenged. 'Serena for me is a champion.

But her confidence ahead of Saturday, where she became just the second woman to defeat Serena a couple of times in a Slam final, was also buoyed by her late blooming.

Instead, the pressure of her new status and trying to back up what she had achieved crushed Kerber, and last season she won only six matches at the four slams combined. "I'm the first German after Steffi to have won, that's awesome". So I said, "If you're going to try, let's go 100 per cent", and she took it and one day in Rome she made the switch in her mind, she wanted the challenge. I look forward to continuing to be out here and do what I do best.

"I just feel like to tell all the mums, like I had such a long struggle to come back and it was really hard and honestly I feel like if I can do it, they can do it".

"Not knowing how this match would go, two hours, three hours, I don't think they could put the men's semi-final behind the women because they have to come back the next day".

More than two hours later than originally scheduled, Williams and two-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber are under way in their final on Centre Court.

Court and Belgian Kim Clijsters are the only other grand slam-winning mums in 50 years of professional tennis.

"I had a really tough delivery and multiple surgeries and nearly didn't make it, to be honest".

"She was playing very different to me, a lot of slice and playing strong off the forehand and having a good serve", Kerber told reporters.
