Some Democrats with eye on 2020: ‘Abolish ICE’

A loose but emerging coalition of politicians, activists and pro-immigrant protesters has deployed posters and slogans in its calls for the dismantling of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, which critics say has treated some would-be immigrants cruelly and unfairly.

Homan said Gillibrand fails to mention that ICE has arrested 5,000 criminal aliens in New York City and protects the state's northern border against opioid trafficking and cross-border crime.

"I was proud to join @QueensBarrios today for our #KeepFamilesTogether march in Jackson Heights and Corona, some of the most diverse neighborhoods in the U.S. (and the world!)", Ocasio-Cortez tweeted after attending the event. He added that the "radical left Dems" would try to abolish all police if ICE was abolished.

That passion is heartening for the broader anti-Trump coalition, which hopes the weekend marches will attract people who have otherwise been on the sidelines, said David S. Meyer, a political science professor at the University of California, Irvine, who has authored books on US political protest.

ROSE: ICE was created along with the Department of Homeland Security just 15 years ago. "I love that issue if they're going to actually do that".

Last week, ICE temporarily closed its Portland field offices after demonstrators had pitched tents in front of the facility to protest the Trump administration's policy to criminally prosecute anyone who crosses the border illegally. But local organizers are shouldering on-the-ground planning, many of them women relying on informal networks established during worldwide women's marches on Trump's inauguration and its anniversary. Immigration enforcement is important, both sides agree on that. "They were threatening our family members", one officer said, declining to elaborate. The building has been closed since then, and Thursday's actions were to allow for it to reopen.

The agency's targeting of undocumented immigrants has weakened its employees' ability to carry out other work, argued 19 officers who signed the letter, which was obtained by the Texas Observer. Danialle James, 32, was still in her pajamas as she yelled toward the line of officers in riot gear. "I know people aren't sympathetic to deportation officers, but they have a rough time with this too and I think more so under this administration".

Occupy ICE movements have popped up in various cities, including New York City, Los Angeles and Detroit, in opposition to the immigration policies. "We're participating in passive resistance".

On Friday, Gillibrand echoed her sentiment on Facebook, writing "We need to abolish ICE".
