"We don't need more bullying, and I'm exhausted of it!" "I hate to leave".

In 1967, his plane was shot down on a bombing mission over North Vietnam. Jon Kyl and McCain's wife, Cindy, as possible successors, the Washington Post reported. McCain has written that that's when he learned to trust not just his legacy but his own judgment - and his resilience.

In November 2016, voters elected him to his sixth term in the Senate.

He called it "my asterisk" and the worst mistake of his life.

On March 14, 1973, McCain was released but he would carry the physical scars of his POW experience with him for the rest of his life.

This past month my husband and I got to visit John and Cindy at their ranch in Arizona. All five denied improper conduct. "But in this loss, and in this sorrow, I take comfort in this: John McCain, hero of the republic and to his little girl, wakes today to something more glorious than anything on this earth".

"In war and peace, John McCain dedicated himself to service & sacrifice for our country".

Ducey has said he won't consider appointing politicians who lobbied for McCain's seat prematurely. "But he also had a great concern for and love of the environment", said Sen.

The son and grandson of Navy admirals, Mr McCain was a fighter pilot during the Vietnam War. He lost to George W. Bush in the 2000 primaries and eight years later, became the Republican nominee taking on fellow Sen. But the town halls remained a fond McCain memory.

Kengor, author of books on the faith of politicians, said: "Some people talk the faith and some people walk the faith". "They were so authentic and open and honest".

McCain tried to inject some youth and enthusiasm into his campaign with his selection of Palin, Alaska's governor, as his running mate. The McCain's later adopted her and named her Bridget. "He's a decent, family man, citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues and that's what this campaign is all about".

Still, McCain could be proudly partisan.

McCain was diagnosed with glioblastoma last Summer, an extremely aggressive brain cancer. Edward Kennedy, in 2009. His family and friends will be in our prayers. John McCain was a man of deep conviction and a patriot of the highest order.

Still bearing a black eye and scar from surgery, McCain gave a thumbs-down signal in a vote to scuttle a Trump-backed bill that would have repealed the Obamacare healthcare law and increased the number of Americans without health insurance by millions.

Trump's campaign promise - and the premiere item on his agenda - was dead.

In his 30-plus years in Congress, McCain would overcome an early scandal that threatened to end his political career and earned the nickname "Maverick" because of his willingness, at times, to break ranks with his own Republican party. The longtime Arizona senator and decorated Navy hero died Saturday at the age of 81.

"Flattery secures his friendship, criticism his enmity,"McCain said of Trump in his memoir, The Restless Wave, which was released in May". He tweeted about praying for people who were victims of tragedies, from a Sutherland Springs, Texas, church to the tourist attractions of New York City. A life lived embodying those truths casts a long, long shadow.

On Twitter, the U.S. first lady wrote: "Our thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathy to the McCain Family. And I can vote my conscience without worry", McCain wrote.
