The National Transportation Safety Board and New Mexico state police are investigating.

Early reports from the scene indicate the truck blew a tire, sending it into oncoming traffic. The front half of the bus was destroyed.

A spokeswoman from Rehoboth McKinley Christian Health Care Services in Gallup said eight people were taken to that hospital and one of them was sent to UNMH.

More than 33 patients have been transported to local area hospitals with injuries, some are said to be in critical condition, ABC News reported, quoting authorities. UNM officials didn't release any details about the patients' conditions.

A number, 505-722-2002, has been established for family members of passengers, said state police. Nearby was an overturned vehicle and what appeared to be a truck trailer on its side, with contents spilled on the median.

The bus began its route in St. Louis Wednesday morning as was scheduled to arrive in Los Angeles Friday morning. Part of the side of the bus was torn off, he said.

They could not immediately say how many people were injured.

Benge said it was one of the worst crashes he has seen in his 35 years of driving. At least four people were killed.

Chris Jones saw the wreckage and stopped to help.

According to the police, preliminary crash information indicated a semi-tractor-trailer traveling on I-40 eastbound had a tire blowout and crossed into oncoming westbound traffic, colliding with a Greyhound bus.

Greyhound says the bus was in between Albuquerque to Phoenix, and there were 47 passengers on board.

"We are fully cooperating with local authorities and will also complete an investigation of our own", Booker said.
