Meyer, who has won three national titles, was placed on paid administrative leave Wednesday after the disclosure of domestic abuse by Courtney Smith, the former wife of one-time Ohio State assistant Zach Smith, who was sacked last month.

Meyer was placed on paid administrative leave by Ohio State on Wednesday afternoon following the revelation that Courtney Smith told wives of Ohio State coaches - including Meyer's wife Shelley - that she was abused by Zach.

Sitting down for an interview published by Stadium on Wednesday, Courtney Smith said, "I do believe [Meyer] knew, and instead he chose to help the abuser and enable the abuser and believe whatever story Zach was telling everybody".

Texas coach Tom Herman, who served as Urban Meyer's offensive coordinator from 2012-14, declined Thursday to discuss the domestic violence disclosures that rocked the Ohio State program. Meyer said the decision to fire Smith was a "very tough call".

Since returning to coaching, Meyer's program has been one of the most dominant in college football, and his players have mostly stayed out of major trouble.

Urban Meyer's days leading the Buckeyes could be numbered.

The group also will "be available to provide consultation and advice and assist with communication to the full board on the matter", the university said in a statement. He was Ohio State's wide receivers coach until his firing last week.

The most recent charge occurred in May, during an incident that occurred when Zach Smith dropped off the couple's son at his wife's home. Zach Smith pleaded not guilty last month. The Smiths separated in June 2015 and divorced in 2016. Zach Smith was charged with criminal trespassing and a protection order was filed.

Zach Smith's ex-wife alleges her ex-husband threw her into a wall when she was eight to 10 weeks pregnant in 2009.

"I can't say it didn't happen because I wasn't there", Meyer said. I've never had a conversation about it. "I don't know. Someone texted me that last night".
