Sevilla played the match, which serves as a curtain raiser for the Spanish league season, in the middle of its playoff to qualify for the Europa League's group phase.

The video assistant referee (VAR) was used for the first time in Spanish football on Sunday to award midfielder Pablo Sarabia with Sevilla's opening goal against Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup.

He's also on course to become the most decorated player in club football.

Ernesto Valverde was impressed with Ousmane Dembele's performance against Sevilla after his stunning goal helped Barcelona win the Supercopa de Espana.

"We grew as the game went on". He was able to create space where there wasn't much against a team that sat back more than we expected.

However, he did stress that he wanted the €105 million signing from Borussia Dortmund to stay at Camp Nou, hinting that the decision was not necessarily his to make.

Vaclik made another save to keep out a Luis Suarez strike in the 24th minute, before Barcelona debutant Clement Lenglet - in action against his former club - headed a Messi free kick over the crossbar as chances continued to arrive.

"He is with us and we have high expectations for him".

"As the game went on, he got better".

New captain and five-time Ballon d'Or victor Messi celebrated his 33rd title as LaLiga champions Barca edged Spanish rivals Sevilla 2-1 in Tangier.

"We're happy because we have won a competition, beating a tough opponent", the coach said. "It's good to win because it gives you belief in what you are doing and it allows you to start the season on the front foot".
