We do get a healthy look at Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali as the show's new lead. The first teaser of the is all about the Oscar victor investigating a malicious crime and finding himself going deeper and deeper into the heart of darkness, and it looks stupendous.

Carmen Ejogo, Scoot McNairy, Mamie Gummer and Stephen Dorff co-star in the series, which will premiere nearly three and a half years after the second season closed out. What it will gain from that is a tighter focus and less confusion, and I'm now throwing it out there this could be the best season yet.

Set over three different time periods, season three of "True Detective" follows the investigation into a crime that takes place in the Ozark mountains, southeastern United States. My whole brain's a bunch of missing pieces.

Fans of True Detective can catch the upcoming season on HBO. "I want to know the whole story", states Ali in the voiceover as his character struggles to connect the dots. Rounding out the cast is Ray Fisher (Justice League) as Wayne's son and Carmen Ejogo (Selma) as Amelia Reardon, an Arkansas schoolteacher. Jeremy Saulnier (Blue Ruin) and Daniel Sackheim (The Walking Dead and The Americans) will serve as directors for some of the season's episodes. "This case, it's more haunting than anything".

"Touch darkness and darkness touches you back", a True Detective synopsis states, calling it a "searing series of troubled cops and the investigations that drive them to the edge".
