Trump launches Space Force; internet launches Hollywood-style reactions

It is eventually up to politicians to vote to authorise the new branch of the military.

"The only thing we can't afford is inaction", he said of the costs, adding that a Space Force would guarantee "American dominance in space".

So we gotta ask.

Establishing a new military service geared at space would be a massive undertaking and require action from Congress both to establish the service and provide funding. Both nations are reportedly developing "hypersonic missiles", which USA missile defense radars may not be able to detect.

"We're only at the beginning of meeting the rising security threats our nation faces in space today and in the future", Pence said. President Trump has also called on Congress to appropriate $8 billion for space security systems over the next five years.

Currently, the Air Force oversees most space capabilities and there is some push back from officials who worry Space Force's mission would be duplicative and create turf wars.

The vast United States military divides the globe into various commands, such as Central Command in the Middle East or Indo-Pacific Command in Asia, and so a new Space Command would be on an equal footing with these.

Mattis a year ago opposed a House effort to establish a space corps within the Air Force, even sending a letter Congress stating his position.

Kelly, who has a twin brother Mark, told Baldwin "this idea seems to have come from one person who is not a space or military expert" - President Trump - and "a longer discussion" was needed on the issue.

But, earlier this week, Mr Mattis said he is in "complete alignment" with Mr Trump's concerns about United States space assets.

The creation of the Space Development Agency.

But just previous year, Mattis voiced skepticism on the need to create a separate Space Force.

The Pentagon sent a report to Congress on Tuesday detailing steps towards meeting Trump's order.

He welcomed what he said was a first step in a multi-year process.

"Recently our adversaries have been working to bring new weapons of war into space itself", Pence said.

In the meantime, the Space Command would be led by a four-star general, and Pence said a new high-level civilian post - assistant defense secretary for space - would also be created.

The Department of Defense is expected to release a report later today "outlining the first stages of our administration's plan to implement the president's guidance and turn his vision into a reality", Pence said.

Mattis had previously opposed the creation of a separate military branch focused on space, writing to Rep. Mike Turner of OH in July of 2017 that he did "not wish to add a separate service that would likely present a narrower and even parochial approach to space operations".
