Reports in Italy had suggested that La Samp and the Gunners had already agreed a deal for the Uruguay worldwide, but the transfer was put on hold until after his participation in Russian Federation.

Torreira in an interview basically confirming his move said: 'I would have been very happy to be able to return to Uruguay with my teammates, but this is a fantastic opportunity [to join Arsenal] and I do not want to waste it'.

Unai Emery is a known admirer of the player and is reportedly keen on the idea of bringing him to the Emirates this summer.

He's the man who every Arsenal fan waits to hear from when it comes to transfers and he has finally spoken about Lucas Torreira.

"Arsenal offered to do the medical examinations in Russian Federation but we decided against it because we felt it's inconvenient, it is not the right time".

"It is as good as a fact that Lucas will join Arsenal", Ricardo Torreira told Fox Sports Argentina.

Now, Uruguay are heading home after the 2-0 defeat to France on Friday afternoon and it seems that the Lucas Torreira deal is moving closer.

Arsenal has already agreed a £26.4million deal with Sampdoria who are ready to let go of the defensive midfielder this summer because the gunners have met their asking price.

Emery is unlikely to add any more first team players to his squad unless other players leave, with Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Berndt Leno and Stephan Lichtsteiner all arriving in the past few weeks.

Arsenal begin their pre-season campaign at non-league Boreham Wood on July 14.
