Sturridge has had little to celebrate over several injury blighted seasons at Liverpool, but with one deft swipe of his left boot on Saturday he rescued a last-gasp point at Chelsea and reminded his manager of his rare finishing prowess.

Eden Hazard's sublime goal looked like giving Chelsea another victory over the Reds, this time in the Premier League.

England worldwide Sturridge, 29, has never been assured of a place in the Liverpool attack under Jurgen Klopp, while a succession of injuries have taken their toll.

Jürgen Klopp offered his support to Mohamed Salah after substituting him in Liverpool's 1-1 draw at Chelsea, and backed the reigning footballer of the year to overcome his first hard spell since joining the club.

Saturday's strike was Sturridge's fourth goal in seven appearances across all competitions this season, yet only two of those have been in the starting team with the majority coming off the bench.

For all their intricate play, it was a long ball over the top from David Luiz that set Willian free, but the Brazilian was denied by compatriot Alisson Becker when in on goal. "I know already that you will make a fuss of that but that's football", Klopp said.

"We thought West Brom was a good idea for him to get minutes under his belt again, and when he came back, he was an option for us".

'It was not Mo's best game of his career, 100%.

"Our defence have been really good also and they have had a lot of clean sheets so far this season, and they will be upset they haven't got one today but I think all in all it's probably a fair result".

"But I want him so that he wants to be decisive, to score in these situations".

"So I'd say it was between those two but you can't discount Chelsea. When he came into the dressing was really loud and the boys are all really happy for him because he really is in a good moment".

But while neither team finished with three points, they both emerged from the game with their title aspirations consolidated by their respective performances.
