Overbridge collapses in south Kolkata. Several feared trapped

As per reports, some vehicles were also crushed during the incident.

There were no more immediate details of the cause of the collapse.

Eleven injured have been rushed to the nearby SSKM Medical College and Hospital.

She added: "We have heard that four-five labourers used to stay in a temporary tin shed under the bridge".

"It is really unfortunate that the bridge has collapsed".

While police confirmed the death of one person, fire brigade personnel engaged in the rescue work said 25 injured were pulled out from the rubble.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the incident. "Thankfully my passenger and I escaped unhurt", said Suman Jha, a taxi driver who survived the collapse.

"The bridge deserved better maintenance", said Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi.

Road traffic between Kolkata's southwestern areas and South 24 Parganas district were also severely affected as the Majerhat road overbridge is a connector to the arterial Diamond Harbour Road. Rescue teams, disaster management teams, Police CP, firefighters already at the spot.

The 40-year-old bridge in the crowded Alipore area collapsed around 4.30 pm during rush hour over the railway tracks. But now our focus is on the rescue operation. Many vehicles are said to be buried under the debris.

As the saying goes that history repeats itself, another bridge collapsed in Kolkata, West Bengal, just like the other bridge that collapsed in the city in 2016.

Opposition parties blamed the Trinamool Congress government and said its "callousness towards the fix of old bridges" was the main reason for the collapse.

The mishap comes two years after the collapse of an under-construction Vivekananda Flyover in north Kolkata which claimed over two dozen lives.
