With England likely to heavily rotate their squad following the 2-1 defeat to Spain, this will be more a chance for players to show Southgate why he should pick them next worldwide break than anything else.

Saturday's match at Wembley was Gareth Southgate's side's first fixture since they reached the World Cup semi-finals in Russian Federation.

It could be that Southgate is presiding over a power shift in the engine room, with Dier likely to start in Tuesday night's friendly clash with Switzerland.

The 22-year-old will return to north London to be further assessed by Tottenham's medical team and while the injury has been described as "minor", the Evening Standard says no timeline has been set for the midfielders recovery.

Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier and Harry Kane all earned a place in the final 55 nominees for the FIFA FIFPro World 11 after impressive domestic and World Cup form over the previous year.

Marcus Rashford gave England the flawless start with an 11th-minute strike from Luke Shaw's pass but Spain responded with an nearly instant equaliser thanks to Saul Niguez's low finish.

Gareth Southgate gave a start to Marcus Rashford, a player now struggling to make his mark with Manchester United this season. "We are talking about a player of a top level".

"Winning like this on this stage will do us a lot of good and we've started in the best way possible but in football the only thing that matters is the present".

With many fearing the worst for Luke Shaw, it was reported shortly afterward that he was doing well, and had been contacting his family from within the England dressing-room to inform them of his condition.

Southgate said the goal should have stood but admitted his side had struggled to counter Spain's passing game.

"For me, I'm under contract, I'm enjoying the role, I love the challenge of it and that's it really".

"It was a good game, a good test against a team that keeps the ball well", said Kane. "I am under contract, I have two years, you know that leads to a European Championship, which we have games at Wembley [in] which is going to be a brilliant experience", Southgate told reporters.

"I think it's clear for everybody to see that it should have been a goal".
