Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is embarrassing the Premier League giants, according to Paul Scholes, who is surprised the club are standing by the former Chelsea boss.

United host Valencia in the Champions League on Tuesday night following a string of indifferent displays which have put Mourinho's position under scrutiny.

United's result on Tuesday means Mourinho has now gone winless in four consecutive games for the first time in his managerial career.

It comes just after Valencia attempted to quash rumours of a rift in the Manchester United camp by claiming Mourinho has the full backing of the squad.

Sections of the Old Trafford faithful were far from impressed with this latest performance that failed to yield a serious effort on goal until the 71st minute.

"I'm actually slightly surprised he survived after Saturday, the performance was so bad", he told BT Sport.

"The players tried. They raised the level of their efforts".

Mourinho has endured a hard week, failing to win at home for the fourth match in a row, losing away to West Ham and getting knocked out of the Carabao Cup at the hands of Championship side Derby County.

Despite the lack of chances created, Mourinho was satisfied with what he saw from his under-pressure team. "You want to be playing against the best teams and maybe that's what we need - we need a big team to come here and pick ourselves back up again to show we are United".

"I think his mouth is probably out of control and I think he is embarrassing the club".

Asked if he is fully behind Mourinho, he replied: '100%.

"We have two matches against Juventus to make points. It will be good for the team if we can beat Newcastle", he said.
