Florida lottery warns public about Mega Millions scam

In early 2016, Powerball had a $1.6 billion grand prize, and that still stands as the highest lottery jackpot ever in the U.S.

The largest Powerball jackpot - and biggest in US lottery history - was $1.586 billion, which was shared by winners in California, Florida and Tennessee in January 2016. In Michigan, winners are anonymous unless they win Mega Millions or Powerball prizes.

A single victor in New York City who opts for the US$548m cash jackpot would only bring home about half that much, US$276m, after all taxes are paid, according to calculations by H&R Block, a U.S. tax services company.

The odds of winning the jackpot aren't good, at one in 302.5 million.

Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.

The jackpot hit a whopping $868 million on Wednesday, and the prize tempted so many people to buy Mega Millions tickets that the jackpot was increased yet again.

And then there's Friday's monster Mega Millions drawing, the largest in the game's history.

Lottery staff are headed to Lexington to execute a series of security checks at the retailer that sold the winning ticket.

The all-time highest Mega Millions jackpot is now even bigger.

"Ultimately, these games, they're all about the jackpots", Gordon Medenica, Maryland's lottery and gaming director, said Wednesday.

The jackpot goes to a victor who matches the five numbers and the Powerball number.

Since Mega Millions modified the formula, players now pick five numbers from 1 to 70 and a Mega number of 1 to 25.

One Powerball player in MA woke up a million dollars richer Thursday morning.

You must match all five numbers plus the Mega number to win the grand prize. But raising the number of Mega Balls makes it harder to win the jackpot.

The Maine lottery, for example, has a Mega Millions deadline of 9:50 p.m. ET on the day of each drawing.
