According to the news station, the demand for cash is meant to circumvent the Israeli coordination and supervision mechanism that was in place until now, according to which the Palestinian Authority would pay Gaza worker salaries transparently.

Following the exchanges, Islamic Jihad's media office announced on Saturday morning that it had accepted an Egypt-mediated ceasefire with Israel.

Israel did not immediately respond, and past ceasefires in the conflict have not always stuck. In addition, following the escalation in Gaza, Israeli Defense Minister, Avigdor Lieberman, met with Israeli army senior officials in Tel Aviv to assess the situation.

Conricus said there had been no signs of Hamas trying to rein in Islamic Jihad.

Israeli aircraft have struck dozens of militant sites across the Gaza Strip as militants fired some 30 rockets into Israel.

Earlier, Israeli military spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Jonathan Conricus accused Syria and Iran of involvement in the rocket attack.

As part of the fragile agreement, Israel would now allow material for those projects to enter Gaza through the Kerem Shalom crossing.

The latter comment appeared to be a reference to the ongoing unrest in the Gaza Strip, where the Hamas terror group has fomented violent rioting, rocket strikes, and airborne arson attacks using kites and balloons.

"Part of the address by which we will deal with this fire is also in Damascus and the Quds Force", he said. But Israel holds Hamas, which seized control of Gaza in 2007, responsible for all fire emanating from the territory.

It said it would halt its fire if Israel did the same.

Islamic Jihad, a smaller militant group, implicitly claimed responsibility for the rocket fire.

Condemning the Israeli airstrikes, al-Qidra called on worldwide organizations to protect medical institutions and paramedics against Israeli air attacks in Gaza.

Residents in affected areas have been warned not to hold gatherings of up to 100 people in open areas and 500 in closed areas.

The rocket fire comes amid a deadly flare-up in violence in the Gaza Strip.

More than 200 Palestinians have been killed and at least 10,000 wounded by Israeli forces since the beginning of the Great March of Return on 30 March.

According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, 213 Gazans have been killed by Israeli forces during the protests. One of those killed was blown up by his own hand grenade, which exploded prematurely, witnesses said.

Eight different alarm sirens were activated throughout the night in Israel's southern communities, including the city of Sderot near the Gaza border.
