'Messi's a great player, but he's not a leader, ' Maradona said. "It's useless trying to make a leader out of a man who goes to the toilet 20 times before a game", Maradona said.

Messi has earned 128 caps for Argentina, with that tally leaving him 19 short of Javier Mascherano's record haul.

"Before speaking to the coach and players he will be on the PlayStation".

Manchester City has denied reports that the club tried and failed to sign Barcelona striker, Lionel Messi. Then, on the pitch, he wants to be the leader. "I'd call him up and play him how I know Messi plays".

Messi and Maradona are both revered in Argentina as the best two players the football-mad country has ever produced.

Messi's cousin Maxi Biancucchi branded Maradona, who has battled weight problems as well as addictions to drugs and alcohol, "ignorant" over his comments.

The 31-year-old is Barca's record goalscorer and succeeded the departed Andres Iniesta as captain this season.

The Albiceleste great and former head coach, who at times handed Messi the armband during the 2010 World Cup, is adamant any return should come with the caveat of no captaincy.

Escalating his attack on the Argentina striker, Maradona also said that if he was coach of national team, he would "not call on Messi" before adding "never say never".

"You have to take the pressure off him in order to get the leader we want Messi to be, that he will not be".

Argentina beat Iraq 4-0 on Thursday with a new-look side, taking their unbeaten run since Russian Federation to three games.

However, Lionel Scaloni's new-look side face a sterner examination of their credentials on Tuesday when they meet South American rivals Brazil in Jeddah.
