Mental health awareness programme kicks-off Wednesday

It is time to act on mental health, ' he said in a message on Tuesday marking World Mental Health Day to be observed today.

Workers in the United Kingdom are open to using a range of technologies - from online chatrooms, mobile apps and GP services to artificial intelligence and virtual reality - to help look after their mental health, according to results of a survey from Accenture.

This one-day Forum will take place on Friday 26 October, at the Naumi Airport Hotel in Auckland, tickets are still available at $250 pp + GST. When it first started, there was no particular theme.

"For employers, developing early intervention strategies is critical - this includes the provision of mental health first-aiders, providing adequate mental health training for managers, and resilience building for employees, amongst other things".

"I have suffered myself, as has my family, with anxiety and depression and struggled to get the appropriate treatment, so I'm thrilled to back this cause to destigmatise any issues around mental health concerns, and open up the dialogue".

Meanwhile, another mental health drive has also been launched, called Let's Talk and backed by Mental Health UK. Other causes could be genetic factors as well as traumatic incidents in a teenager's life.

There is also a need for greater recognition of mental health pressures faced by cancer patients, from feeling isolated to enduring the exhaustion of treatments such as chemotherapy.

Changing Minds is a Lottery funded project, but as the Lottery funding runs out in November, they are searching for further funding. It could be that they have entered college, have started a job for the first time or are living overseas alone. "It is society's responsibility to educate its youth on how to cope with the stresses of life and how to deal with everyday issues such as peer influence, including alcohol and substance abuse", she added.

She cited WHO's definition of health, which states, that health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of a disease or infirmity. However, a lot of them are not treated.

While six out of 10 people said they felt their employer should be doing more to address mental health issues, on a more positive note, over a third (37%) said their employer recognised stress as a valid condition and worked to help them resolve issues. They work closely with departments in social care, health and community and business networks to provide supported housing, talking therapies and community based programmes.

The Million Minds Research Mission, which was announced in this year's Budget, will help an additional one million people be part of new approaches to prevent, detect, diagnose, and treat mental illness.
