Names are released in alphabetical order with the likes of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and FIFA "The Best" victor Luka Modric certain to make the shortlist.

Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo was among the first 10 nominees for the men's Ballon d'Or trophy announced on Monday, awarded by France Football magazine to the best player in the world.

Ronaldo won the award a year ago.

Ronaldo is the defending champion, having won his fifth Ballon d'Or in 2017.

Ronaldo looked a certainty for his third straight Ballon d'Or after leading Real Madrid to their unprecedented threepeat in the continent's prime club competition, where he was yet again the top scorer.

Ronaldo played a key role in Real's Champions League triumph last season and scored a World Cup hat-trick for Portugal against Spain.

England only have one representative on the list in Harry Kane while Gareth Bale is also among the nominees.

Antoine Griezmann, a World Cup victor with France and Europa League champion at Atletico Madrid, is nominated alongside worldwide teammates, Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante, Manchester United's Paul Pogba and PSG's Kylian Mbappe.

Roberto Firmino from Brazil, Liverpool and Diego Godin from Uruguay, Atletico Madrid.

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has been included in the list alongside Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero.

Modric's global team-mates Mario Mandzukic and Ivan Rakitic are also on the shortlist, as are Liverpool duo Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

This award runs alongside FIFA's The Best, which was won by Luka Modric in September.

A panel of journalists selects the Ballon d'Or victor which was first established in 1956 and will this year feature a women's award for the first time.

Kylian Mbappe is third-favourite after winning the World Cup with France at the age of 19, with 6-1 odds.
