Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools issued a statement, saying the student was shot at Butler High School in Matthews, North Carolina, about 12 miles southeast of Charlotte.

The Matthews Police Department stated on Facebook they responded to a shooting at Butler High School Monday morning.

The shooting took place at the beginning of the school day. Authorities have not released the names of the students.

A school resource officer called police after the shooting, which occurred in a hallway. Surveillance video showed there was a fight between two students and that it was "isolated to the hall". "We are going to review all our procedures, we are going to review our security plans and perhaps will do things that are a little more aggressive". Maybe we didn't intervene early enough in a bullying situation.

Fox 8 reported the incident stemmed "from a student conflict". We have contacted Charlotte-Mecklenburg authorities and will assist in any way we can, but of course, our first thoughts are for the parents and other loved ones of the student who passed away.

The school was placed on lockdown as officials worked to investigate the scene. The school district said there is no further danger.

Jatwan Craig Cuffie is accused of shooting a classmate dead in a hallway in Butler High School on the morning of October 29. The statement added that classes would continue for students who remain on campus.

Brenda Kenyon, Ryan's mother, said police at the scene told parents to gather at nearby Elevation Church.
