Train runs over people watching "Dussehra celebrations", more than 50 killed

At least 58 people - all Dussehra revellers watching the burning of Ravan effigies near the tracks - have died. "Railways is conducting immediate relief and rescue operations", Goyal tweeted from the USA, where he had gone to attend an event.

The country is home to hundreds of railway crossings that are unmanned and particularly accident prone, with people often ignoring oncoming train warnings.

Several people were mowed down by one of the trains, they added.

"The tragedy is heart-wrenching".

He says the train didn't stop after the accident.

Amrinder Singh, the state's top elected official, told reporters that he had reports of 50 to 60 people dead. Have asked officials to provide immediate assistance that is required, tweeted PM Mlodi.

Further speaking on this incident, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has said that the authorities have set up crisis management group under Brahm Mohindra in order to monitor the relief and rehabilitation efforts in Amritsar.

A crisis management center was in operation, and Singh described the mobilization of local authorities as on par with "war footing". My deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones&I pray that the injured recover quickly.

Cricketer turned politician Navjot Singh Sidhu's wife Navjit Kaur was said to be at the celebrations as the chief guest for the event that was organised by Congress Party.

Minster of State Manoj Sinha, Chairman Railway Board Ashwani Lohani and top officials left Delhi tonight.
