The result means the Czechs have now won the event six times in the last eight years, their latest triumph coming despite being without the injured Karolina Pliskova and Petra Kvitova, who was absent from Saturday's singles due to illness.

But, propelled by the sold-out O2 Arena, the four-time Fed Cup victor regained composure in the second to sweep aside the Russian-born Kenin, who is still in search of her maiden WTA singles title. It will be an interesting match, ' Czech captain Petr Pala said after training, according to the CTK news agency.

Yet they still remain heavy favourites against a USA team featuring three debutants, including Kenin, because their best players are all unavailable.

"We can only be aggressive and go after it tomorrow", Riske said.

Both players made 32 unforced errors and the American had 23 winners _ two more than Strycova _ but the Czech made her experience count in the decisive points.

Sofia Kenin of the US.

"I'm very confident about the team and I really liked the way Barbora and Katerina have practised".

The US and the Czechs are the most successful teams in Fed Cup history, with the hosts also being second best in terms of head-to-head, winning only two of their previous 12 meetings. "It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity".

Siniakova responded to the setback by easing to a 3-0 lead, while she came out on top in a dramatic fifth game - in part thanks to a fortunate net-cord - that spanned 19 minutes, making it 4-1. "It will be a fun day".

Kvitova, current No7 in the world after a stunning year of five titles, has been a stalwart of the Czech team through all five of those title runs, and won all four of the rubbers she played this year. "It was a long match, a lot of effort, long points, we fought hard until the end", said Kenin. "Of course I expect a tough match", added Siniakova, who has a 2-1 head-to-head record with Riske while Strycova and Kenin have never met on court.

Siniakova and Barbora Krejcikova are then scheduled to face Danielle Collins and the Czech-born Nicole Melichar in the final doubles rubber.
