Thousands flee raging wildfires in California

What has been dubbed Camp Fire began early Thursday near the town of Pulga and moved west, consuming 8,000 acres by 1 pm, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Newsom issued the declaration Thursday for Butte County as the fast-moving fire continues to burn around the town of Paradise about 180 miles (290 kilometers) northeast of San Francisco.

Officials have recovered the remains of five people from vehicles that were "overcome by" the raging fire in Butte County, the sheriff's department there announced on Friday morning.

Residents have now been ordered to evacuate from several more towns to the west of Thousand Oaks, including Calabasas immediately south of Highway 101 and Malibu on the coast, as well as from the western edge of Los Angeles.

Just 12 minutes after it started Thursday afternoon, the flames spread across USA 101, leaving several drivers temporarily stranded.

The Woolsey blaze was also burning in parts of Los Angeles County.

Chico police officer John Barker, along with his partner, evacuated several seniors from an apartment complex in the area.

Flames were engulfing homes, utility poles were crashing down and things were exploding, she said. We're doing everything we can to get people out of the affected areas'. As of Friday morning, numerous roads leading out of town were closed.

"This fire is very unsafe, please evacuate if asked to do so!" the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire, tweeted.

Dramatic footage shows flames closing in around the highways out of town and thick smoke hanging in the sky, obscuring the horizon. Reinbold said Thursday he lives in the middle of town and doesn't know if his house is standing.

He said sheriff's deputies helped patients evacuate.

"The wind that was predicted came and just wiped it out".
