WH Denies Trump Rhetoric Responsible for Recent Extremist Violence

But the attacks on the eve of the mid-term elections have prompted questions about whether he should tone down his rhetoric.

President Donald Trump blamed the media Monday for pre-election "anger" as the nation mourned the loss of 11 lives in the weekend shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue, the worst anti-Semitic attack in recent U.S. history.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders is accusing the media of wrongly blaming President Donald Trump for a mail bomb plot and a deadly weekend shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue.

Sanders' tactics were completely disingenuous, arguing that Trump never blamed the media for the attacks, even though he did, and saying that the first thing the media did in response was blamed the president, which was a lie.

He said the media "must stop the open & obvious hostility & report the news accurately & fairly".

She later declined a request from CNN's Jim Acosta to name media organizations that Trump considers "enemies of the people".

Trump condemned the Pittsburgh attack as an act of anti-Semitism and has denounced political violence. "I know quite a bit about the press and know this - they are NOT the enemy of the American people".

Trump has said he plans to go to Pittsburgh, where the 46-year-old Bowers is accused of carrying out the massacre during Saturday prayers at the Tree of Life synagogue.

Rabbi Jeffrey Myers with the Tree of Life synagogue made clear he would be welcome, telling NBC that "it would be my honor to always meet a president of the United States". I'm a citizen. He's my president. "At times, I think there's individuals that the President would be referencing".

Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto, a Democrat, told reporters ahead of the announcement that the White House should consult with the families of the victims about their preferences. "Our attention and our focus is going to be on them, and we don't have public safety that we can take away from what is needed in order to do both", Peduto said.

"This president is asking us to rise above it and come together and unify as a nation", she said. The president wants to be there to show the support of this administration for the Jewish community.

Among those targeted with mail bombs were former president Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, Trump's Democratic rival for the presidency in the 2016 election. He is planning an aggressive campaign schedule during the final days leading up to the November 6 elections. Last week, the NY offices of CNN, the cable network frequently criticized by Trump and his supporters, was evacuated after receiving an explosive device and an envelope containing white powder. "I refer to Fake News Media when mentioning Enemy of the People - but dishonest reporters use only the word 'Media.'", he said. On Twitter on Sunday, he savaged billionaire businessman Tom Steyer, another target of the mail bombs.

Critics of the president also blame his rhetoric for providing encouragement to a Florida man who was arrested last week on charges of mailing homemade bombs to more than a dozen senior politicians and others opposing Trump.
