What Samsung's new foldable phone could actually look like

Mr Justin Denison, a senior vice-president of mobile product marketing, on Wednesday showed a prototype with a screen that he said measured 18.5cm diagonally.

Foldable phones promise the screen of a small tablet in a pocket-sized device.

Samsung said it would be ready for mass production in the coming months.

The Verge's reporter Nick Statt said that when folded, the phone was "bulky" and "feels miles away in quality" from a high-end smartphone.

Samsung also revealed more details about the foldable phone's aspect ratios and resolution.

Up to three apps can run at the same time on the phone. The display is being called the Infinity Flex Display. Several windows can be arranged and used on the large screen. The experience was reengineered to reduce clutter and distractions, allowing the user to better focus and quickly navigate their phone.

Mr Dave Burke, vice-president of engineering for Google's Android software platform, told a Google conference in California that Samsung planned to introduce a new Android-based device early next year.

Samsung is now making it faster and easier for developers to connect their devices and services to the SmartThings platform with a new suite of tools in the redesigned SmartThings Developer Workspace.

A Samsung insider we know by the Twitter and Weibo handle of Ice Universe said that he doesn't expect to see cameras behind the displays of smartphones until 2020. A new foundation?Why would we want our displays to fold?

But they were unexpectedly beaten by a Chinese display start-up, Royole, last week.

What do you think of how Samsung's foldable phone is taking shape? Its FlexPai folding phone was made available for order with a $1,318 starting price. The app developers for Android have also to be kept in the loop to adapt to these changes.

The announcement means other companies can start building the voice assistant system into their own machines and devices as well.
