In fact, users even took to Mosseri's Instagram account to complain about the new design.

Instagram caused a furore among many of its users on Thursday by accidentally releasing a test update to its app, CNBC is reporting.

Instagram first began testing this feature in October, but at the time, it was restricted to the Explore tab.

After the update users now had to swipe left (or right) or tap through the posts in the app, like a modified horizontal scroll.

Millions of users who have received it are greeting the update with outrage, demanding Instagram to reverse the update.

Nearly as soon as the change was made, users took to Twitter to complain and demand the return of the familiar up-and-down scrolling method.

Snap's stock is down almost 70 percent for the year, while Facebook's stock is down 32 percent.

Internet went berzerk and people were horrified at the new layout of Instagram.

"Tap to advance" as it's called, allows users to tap through posts similar to the way you tap to advance stories. Either way, Instagram fans were very happy to have their normal timeline back - at least for now. "But seriously. don't update your app". This means those were the traditional days of the vertical scrolling feeds when we used to do. "We apologise for any confusion".

He also shared a picture of the comments on his last post - all of them from Instagram users decidedly unhappy with the update.

"Not to be dramatic but this new Instagram update is the worst thing that's ever happened to me", one said.

For now, the update remains just a test (according to Mosseri) and will not be rolled out as an official update yet. #InstagramUpdate became one of the top trending Twitter trends in the UK. "If you're still seeing it, simply restart the app", he explained.
