The hilltop cathedral in Washington filled Wednesday with recollections of George H.W. Bush as a modest but mighty president, a man whose characteristic humility was belied one final time with all the pageantry of a state funeral.

Meacham recounted how comedian Dana Carvey once said the key to doing an impersonation of Bush was "Mr. Rogers trying to be John Wayne". Bush observed that his father was always "in constant motion", though he was "never too busy to share his life with those around him". "A great and noble man". But his greetings stopped there, as he failed to acknowledge Hillary Clinton, his defeated Democratic rival in 2016. And Bush the father was nothing compared to the son - who lied us into war, embraced torture and police-state-level surveillance and, although he may not have lied about everything, lied about pretty much all the big things. Ostensibly, that's because the family already had a ready-made former president waiting in the wings: the fallen leader's son, whose eulogy collapsed briefly into tears as he imagined his father reunited with his late wife Barbara and daughter Robin, lost to leukemia in 1953. He said he took comfort in knowing "Dad is hugging Robin and holding Mom's hand again".

"He was born with just two settings - full throttle, then sleep", Bush said. Many federal offices are closed along with Wall Street stock markets.

The group had been friends with Bush since they played at a White House barbecue when Bush was vice president. The night before, more than 11,000 people paid their respects as his casket lay in repose all night at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, where his family worshipped.

The CIA also honored Bush, the only spy chief to become president, as three agency directors past and present joined the public in the viewing. His opponent Bill Clinton coasted to victory.

"Bush personified noblesse oblige; Trump is an avatar of the lowest common denominator", he explained.

Prior to the start of the ceremony, the president used his preferred platform - Twitter - to send a message of remembrance, urging Americans to treat the occasion not as a funeral, but as a celebration of the former president's life.
