'Nine and Karl Stefanovic have agreed it is time for him to step off the Today Show, ' Darren Wick, Channel Nine Director of News and Current Affairs said.

"Thanks to our viewers mostly, you are what matters most", the Gold Logie victor said in a statement issued by Nine.

It comes after the network confirmed on Wednesday that Stefanovic would not be returning to the show in 2019.

A source told The Sydney Morning Herald that the "final straw" was Karl and Jasmine Yarbrough's extravagant wedding in Mexico.

In a statement issued on his behalf, he admitted the past year had been "a tough time".

"It's been a tough time".

"An announcement on the new line up and format of the Today Show will be made in the coming weeks".

So there you go, looks like he'll still be hanging around Nine in some capacity for at least awhile.

The Weekend Today host, 60 Minutes presenter and news journalist reportedly left by mutual agreement.

The Telegraph last week broke news that Peter Stefanovic had been moved from his hosting duties on Weekend Today with insiders blaming the Ubergate scandal and poor ratings as the reason behind sending the reporter packing after 15 years with the network.

"Karl Stefanovic has been a co-host of this great show for 14 years".

Sitting alongside Wilkins for the message was temporary host Brenton Ragless, the Adelaide-based news anchor who has been speculated as a likely candidate to fill Stefanovic's role on a permanent basis.

"Peter has chose to explore new opportunities and is looking forward to spending weekends with his wife", a statement from Channel 9 read.

The negative publicity surrounding Stefanovic's split from ex-wife Cassandra Thorburn in 2016 and swift rebound with Yarbrough has been cited as a major factor in the show's horror ratings in recent years.

"Nine and reporter Peter Stefanovic have mutually chose to part ways after 15 years", the spokesman told news.com.au.

And I can tell you from the heart that there is nobody who has worked harder for this show than Karl.
