Coming out of hugely successful Thanksgiving weekend, Nintendo has now announced the Switch is the fastest-selling game console in the United States of the current generation of consoles.

It's also the fast-selling game in the 19-year-old Smash series, according to USA sales data that Nintendo released Tuesday. With an enormous cast of characters featuring familiar faces from popular franchises such as Castlevania, Super Mario Bros.

The Switch console itself sold more than 8.7 million units between its March 2017 launch and last month, putting it ahead of Sony's PlayStation 4 and Microsoft's Xbox One at the same point in their life cycles.

Launched on December 7, Nintendo managed to sell more than three million copies of Super Smash Bros.

Nintendo today revealed the Switch has now sold over 8.7 million units at the 21-month mark in the U.S., more than both the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One did when they were the same "age".

In fact, Nintendo says that sales are so different, 2018 has been its best year since 2011. Super Mario Odyssey has sold over 4.7 million units.

Nintendo eShop sales have grown 105 percent over 2017.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has nudged Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption II into second spot, which has been top dog for most weeks since its release.

Plenty of gamers are feeling the urge to catch 'em all too, since Pokemon Let's Go has sold 2 million copies - this figure includes both the Pikachu and Eevee versions - since its November 16 release.
