The industry's biggest attractions, however, have faced ingrained skepticism from Oscar voters, which explains the "popular film" trial balloon, which many saw as an act of desperation and pandering meant to mollify ABC, the network that televises the awards, after a sizable dip in last year's ratings.

Nominees will be announced on Thursday morning in America.

Darren Criss and Hugh Grant have both been nominated for their roles as gay men in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story and A Very English Scandal respectively. However, don't discount the superhero film, which definitely stands a chance, especially considering it's the highest rated film out of all of them.

I'm on record pointing out the ridiculousness of the Golden Globe Awards, particularly when it comes to TV. "Black Panther" also nabbed a Best Original Song nomination for Kendrick Lamar's "All The Stars" and Best Original Score by Ludwig Göransson. Then again, the HFPA also snubbed him for the first "Creed" as well (Stallone won that year for the film). That's all well and good for the Comedy side, but oh boy, the competition for the Drama category is going to be fierce.

But the Globes also handed nominations to some up-and-comers, including Lucas Hedges (Boy Erased), Timothee Chalamet (Beautiful Boy) and Elsie Fisher, the 15-year-old star of the coming-of-age tale Eighth Grade.

Queen film Bohemian Rhapsody, which tracks the rise of queer music legend Freddie Mercury, has been nominated for best drama film, as well as best actor for Rami Malek.

While it is unclear if Samberg may be nominated in the Best Actor - Television Series Musical or Comedy category, many have speculated that Oh could be nominated for her work on Killing Eve.

A year after winning the Delightful AF category in a landslide at this year's Emmy Awards, Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg have been announced as the hosts of the 2019 Golden Globe Awards.

The duo follows previous hosts Seth Meyers (2018), Jimmy Fallon (2017) and Ricky Gervais (2016, 2012, 2011, 2010), as well as co-hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler (2015, 2014, 2013).

The three-hour telecast will air live on NBC coast to coast Sunday, January 6 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT from The Beverly Hilton.

TNT received surprise nominations for the boring "The Alienist" - for limited series and for its star, the German actor Daniel Brühl.
