Broncos coaching search down to two

Kubiak retired after five seasons with the Broncos and a 25-year coaching career following the 2017 season citing health reasons.

Florio notes that Fangio would allow team president John Elway handpick his coaching staff, which could mean the return of former head coach Gary Kubiak to run the team's offence.

The Broncos fired former coach Vance Joseph on December 31 after he posted 5-11 and 6-10 records in his two seasons at the helm.

The Denver Broncos have narrowed their coaching search to Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line coach Mike Munchak, sources told ESPN.

Fangio is well-traveled as a defensive assistant or coordinator in the National Football League, a streak going back to 1986 when he was first hired to coach linebackers for the New Orleans Saints. At 60 years old, Fangio is among the oldest head coaches in the league when so many teams are looking to go with younger offensive coaches or even dive into the pool of college candidates. Elway liked Joseph and met with him nearly daily to talk about the roster and where the team stood. The 49ers aren't expected to play the Broncos during the regular season until 2022 after playing them in December (a 20-14 victory), though they could play in the preseason as the Broncos are a regular exhibition opponent.

However, Elway kept hinting at the need for more leadership, hinting at a presence, of commanding a meeting room. He inherits a Denver defense that finished 13th in scoring at 21.8 points per game last season.

"The different voice, and we both chose to make the change", Elway said.

"I love playing for that guy", Hicks said.

A familiar face to San Francisco 49ers fans is headed to Denver. But CEO Jed York instead went with Tomsula, who was sacked after one season with a 5-11 record. That will be tough with a new mind in the building.

Fangio has never been a head coach at any level. The offense continued a three-year long slump. "The guy knows the game in and out and he knows his players, and ultimately, he wants the best for us out there on the field, so he puts us in positions to make plays". "Therefore, I think guys want that opportunity".
