Scott Layden is now Minnesota's general manager, while Thibodeau was relieved of his duties as president and head coach on Sunday.

The Timberwolves then lost at home to Detroit and Atlanta and on the road against New Orleans, which played without Anthony Davis.

The Athletic first reported that Thibodeau, who was also the president of basketball operations with full authority over the roster, had been let go.

"I'm just taking everything day by day", Saunders said.

"I think all of this was kind of a critical mass for (Timberwolves owner) Glen Taylor to say, 'Something is just not working here. I guess Taylor did not like the direction things were heading and decided to make a change now". Taylor has made clear that he expects results this season, but I thought Thibs would get the entire year to show them. However, Thibodeau was a driving force in bringing the Timberwolves back the playoffs after a 13-year dry spell. Overall with the Timberwolves, he performed quite well finishing 19-21 this season and 97-107 overall.

Hoiberg was sacked as coach of the Bulls on December 3 following a 5-19 start to the season.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski, former Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg is "seriously considered" by Minnesota. It's already been a whirlwind of a season thanks to Sunday's firing of Thibodeau and the Jimmy Butler trade on November 12. Thibodeau and Minnesota's front office eventually sent him to the 76ers in mid-November in exchange for a package centered around Robert Covington and Dario Saric.

Ryan Saunders will serve as the team's interim coach while Scott Layden will remain in his role as general manager.

"You really don't get much sleep, getting thrown into this thing", Saunders said Tuesday morning, January 8, at the Timberwolves' shootaround.
