"It's only mixed doubles, but still it's like a dream come true for me".

"It was my first match back (today), she played unbelievable. It's nice that I'm feeling as good as I am".

Serena Williams and Roger Federer have been on the worldwide tennis circuit for decades - both are 37 years old - and they have won 43 Grand Slam titles between them.

"I said actually the other day to one of my siblings that I would love to live here one day".

Williams is a two-time Hopman Cup victor, having triumphed in 2003 with James Blake and five years later alongside Mardy Fish. "I admire everything she's done on and off the court, we are both fierce competitors and we always want to win", he said, according to Agence France-Presse.

Federer will then face off against America's Frances Tiafoe, before playing Williams in the mixed doubles.

Serena Williams of the USA hits a return against Maria Sakkari of Greece during their fifth session women's singles match on day three of the Hopman Cup tennis tournament in Perth on 31 December 2018.

Kerber won all four of her singles matches without dropping a set in Perth at the start of the year, as part of a 14-match winning streak that was only snapped in the Australian Open semi-final by Simona Halep.

The 37-year-old Federer sent his 23-year-old opponent from Britain back to reality in a one-sided match lasting just 57 minutes.

I'm sure there's a certain air of rivalry ahead of the big match, but the two aren't using the lead-up to rile each other up as some other sportsmen - or, erm, YouTubers - do.

Hoping for a similar start to the new season under new coach Rainer Schuttler, Kerber took the first set against Muguruza comfortably in the battle of the two former world number ones. I couldn't last long.

Even though both her ankles were strapped and required medical attention during the change of sets, Williams moved freely and looked sharper as the match wore on.

"You know I've been training offseason to be ready for Roger, so not sure how I'm going to do but we'll see". In general I felt much more confident, and more me. "I told him it was probably because of jet lag and the heat combined".
