Earlier, Federer overcame a scare in the first set tiebreak to win 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-4) in 93 minutes.

Going down to the final point in the Fast4 format, Switzerland survived a match point in the third set tie-break and managed to snatch the historic win 4-0 1-4 4-3 (4).

Federer did not find the weather in Perth, where he was playing the Hopman Cup, particularly hot. 'I am not getting the heat thing, this week has not been very hot.

Wimbledon champion Kerber won all three of her round-robin matches against Australia, Spain and France, emulated by Zverev to set up a showdown with the Swiss.

As if beating Federer is not flattering enough for Tsitsipas, he now sits 15th in the world tennis rankings, sitting 12 spots behind Federer, and wins like this against one of the best players of all time will do wonders for the 20-year-old's quest to being ranked the number one player in the world.

With both Germany and Australia undefeated in the competition so far, the final match of Group A would determine who would meet the Swiss in the final of the mixed tennis tournament at the RAC Arena in Perth.

Roger Federer sweeps Alexander Zverev in the the men's singles before teaming up with Belinda Bencic for a winning mixed doubles pairing.

Federer's win over Zverev was a step up following earlier victories over rising star Stefanos Tsitsipas, Britain's Cameron Norrie and American Frances Tiafoe.

Roger Federer left the Hopman Cup in Perth and traveled to Melbourne ahead of the Australian Open in style, landing in a private jet on Sunday.

Zverev broke his opponent's serve three times - the first coming in the third game of the first set after some aggressive tennis.

The German's serve is big-and here he maintained a near constant speed of over 200kph-but the more nuanced and accurate serving of Federer ensured the Swiss dropped only two points on his serve in the entire first set.

Critical was Kerber's ability to convert all 4 of her break points during the match, while Bencic was only successful on two of 7.

"I think he's the favourite, regardless of what happened in Doha, the guy had a super, super strong last five, six months of the year", said Federer.

After overpowering a stubborn Ebden, Zverev said he and Kerber were motivated by last year's loss in the final.
