Trump angry at Mitt Romney over criticism

In a June 2016 interview with Newsmax, he said he was open to backing Trump but was uncertain about where Trump stood.

Romney cited three instances in Trump's first two years as president in which he disapproved of how the president conducted himself: his response to the racist violence in Charlottesville, Va.; his support of Roy Moore, the Alabama Senate candidate who was accused of sexual misconduct with teenage girls while he was an adult; and Trump's continued vitriolic attacks on the media.

The president wrote he would rather Romney "focus on Border Security and so many other things where he can be helpful".

"I will say this, if he fought really hard against President Obama like he does against me, he would have won the election", Trump said.

"He should be happy for all Republicans", Trump continued of Romney.

Far-fetched as Romney 2020 may seem, the Trump team signaled that it's taking him seriously minutes after the op-ed was published.

Trump's 2020 campaign manager Brad Parscale responded to Romney with a veiled attack on his Mormonism, tweeting that "the truth is @MittRomney lacked the ability to save this nation".

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., questioned the wisdom of Romney's op-ed, warning the incoming senator that the move could hurt Romney and Utah. He needs to learn how the Senate works. "I acknowledge the president was successful". He later said he would not have taken Trump's endorsement for president had he made the public comments Romney has since rebuked.

Despite Romney's harsh criticism of Trump during the 2016 election cycle, Trump considered Romney for secretary of state but passed him over for Rex Tillerson. Romney appears to have more room with GOP voters in Utah to take on the president.

Special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation continues into Russian Federation meddling in the 2016 election and possible contacts with the Trump campaign.

Romney will be sworn in as a senator on Thursday.

Romney's Washington Post op-ed praised a number of the president's policies but criticized his character. He said the president has gone into a "deep descent" in the past month. But Romney adds: "With the nation so divided, resentful and angry, presidential leadership in qualities of character is indispensable". It's because Romney is a swamp creature more concerned about raising his own national profile than representing the people of Utah.

Steve Bannon, Trump's former White House chief strategist and campaign strategist, once referred to his then-boss as a "streetfighter". I hope he does because that's what his constituents want.

"As an immigrant, a combat veteran, a black American, a millennial, and as a member of the RNC, I wholeheartedly support and endorse President Trump for re-nomination", he wrote.
