Health officials say five cases of measles have been confirmed in southern Texas, including four children under the age of 2.

Jason Davis with Lane County Health and Human Services said there are no confirmed measles cases in Lane County and anyone who thinks they might have it should not leave their house.

These six measles cases during the first month of 2019 are alarming since DSHS only confirmed 9 cases during all of 2018, and 1 during 2017.

The Oregon Legislature will likely take a look at ways to tighten the state's immunization rules in the wake of the Pacific Northwest measles outbreak, Brown said, although she didn't point to any specific proposal.

The confirmed case of measles is in a child residing in Western Bell County.

"Our vaccination rates are not so low that I think we are going to be like Italy or Romania that had thousands of cases a year ago but we could have a few hundred cases", Ludke said. One day without a new measles case might seem an indicator of hope the outbreak is over, but it unfortunately doesn't necessarily indicate the end.

Measles is a contagious virus that spreads through the air via coughing and sneezing. "Measles is so contagious that if someone has it, 90 percent of the people around that person who are not immune will become infected".

"Getting vaccinated protects you as well as those who are unable to receive vaccines due to age or medical conditions", said Michelle Beall, Pharm.D., Clinical Pharmacist, Brookshire Grocery Company.

These worldwide travelers then spread measles upon their return, which cause outbreaks in the USA.

Fever is followed by the onset of cough, runny nose, and/or eye inflammation.

"If you feel like you're experiencing symptoms and signs of a measles infection, contact your health provider", Marlow said.

Texas allowing parents the choice whether to vaccinate their children does have an impact, Beckham said. Your best protection is the MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) vaccine.
